Open Thresholds
From July 28 through September 19, Ghost Pepper Gallery will host it's first solo show, Open Thresholds by glass artist Malina Cipleu.
ABOUT THE EXHIBIT
Open Thresholds begins from the idea that perception is limited to what can be sensed directly, yet much of what is experienced exists beyond that edge. These works explore that threshold—where what is seen begins to soften and what is imagined starts to take shape.
The threshold is not only a physical boundary, but a perceptual one—the point where what is visible begins to dissolve and what is sensed, remembered, or imagined comes forward. Much of this occurs just outside direct focus, in the peripheral field, where forms are less defined but often more deeply felt.
Working with kiln-formed glass, Cipleu uses layered powders, translucency, and modular compositions to create surfaces that shift with light and position. By moving between lower and higher firing temperatures, she allows the material to hold a range of qualities—from granular textures to soft, diffused transitions of color. These processes create a balance between definition and atmosphere, where forms remain slightly open and perception is not fixed.
Rather than depicting nature directly, the work draws from rhythms and patterns observed across natural systems—processes of growth, adaptation, accumulation, erosion, and exchange. Nature becomes a form of intelligence rather than subject matter, informing the way forms emerge, disperse, and reorganize over time.
The work favors suggestion over description. The spaces between elements remain active, holding potential rather than absence. What is only partially revealed invites the viewer to participate in completing the image through attention and experience.
The work does not resolve into a fixed image. Instead, it continues to unfold through shifts in light, position, and perception. It invites a slower kind of looking, where meaning emerges gradually and relationships become visible at the edge of what can be seen.
ARTIST TALK - SATURDAY AUGUST 15, 2PM
If you missed the opening reception, or if you want to learn more about Malina's kiln-formed glass process, we invite you to join this artist talk. During this event, Malina will dive into her background, the inspiration behind Open Thresholds, and the journey that lead her into creating each of the fascinating pieces on display.
